The proxy controls only the network-origin layer. Your collector must select the marketplace and shopping context, then validate the resulting record.

Marketplace and Country Are Not the Same Setting

A German proxy does not automatically turn an Amazon.com request into Amazon.de. Likewise, opening Amazon.de without aligning language, currency, delivery destination, and network region can produce redirects or context that does not represent a normal local shopping view.

Measure complete extraction rate, not HTTP status alone. A consent page, challenge, redirect, empty JavaScript shell, wrong marketplace, wrong child ASIN, or generic delivery context can all produce a technically successful response that should fail business validation.

Compare Cost Per Valid Record

Run a representative authorized sample and measure total bytes, retries, browser time, and accepted records. If a browser transfers 4MB per attempt and only 75% of attempts produce a complete record, the effective traffic per accepted record is much higher than the initial page-size estimate.

When comparing a managed API, include parsing maintenance and browser operations saved. When comparing raw proxies, include the control and data flexibility retained. A managed schema can deploy quickly but may omit a field your pricing model later needs.

“In stock” should be interpreted carefully. A public product page normally exposes an offer-level purchase state and delivery promise, not an audited quantity across Amazon's fulfillment network. Changing the Proxy but Not the Marketplace or Delivery Destination

Amazon Scraping, Official APIs, and Compliance

Amazon.com's current Conditions of Use grant limited site access but exclude several activities relevant to commercial monitoring from that standard license. These include commercial use of Amazon services, collection and use of product listings, descriptions, or prices, and data-mining, robot, or similar extraction tools. The exact legal analysis depends on the project, jurisdiction, authorization, and data use, so material commercial programs should obtain qualified legal review.

Public visibility is not the same as permission to automate collection or reuse the result. Do not use proxies to circumvent access controls, continue after authorization has been withdrawn, collect customer account or personal data, or interfere with Amazon's service. Creators API for Eligible Associates Integrations

Amazon's Selling Partner API for Catalog Items provides programmatic access to Amazon catalog information and supports search by identifiers or keywords plus item retrieval by ASIN. The Product Pricing API supports authorized marketplace pricing and offer workflows.

SP-API is designed for selling partners and authorized developers. Access depends on credentials, roles, seller authorization, marketplace, usage plans, and data-protection requirements. It should be evaluated first for a seller's own catalog, pricing, inventory, offer, and operational needs, but it is not a public, unrestricted feed of every competitor's complete page experience.

When an Official API Is Not a Complete Substitute

An official API can be the cleanest route and still not answer every market-intelligence question. It may be limited to eligible Associates use, authorized seller accounts, specific resources, approved display contexts, documented rate limits, or data the application is licensed to access.

That limitation does not automatically authorize scraping. If an API does not expose a desired field, the next step is to evaluate authorization, contractual routes, licensed data providers, or a revised data scope—not to assume that a proxy overrides the missing permission.
